So, phase one of communication plan has been implemented successfully:
all relevant e-mail address forward to a gmail account... some forward through other e-mails (an alias to a box to google) but there are no residual copies left anywhere along the way... google has the only copy, and with their ever increasing storage, I'll never have to move any of it.
gmail is good for you, use it

phase two of communication plan has been implemented succesfully:
I only have one phone number now, it is verizon, gets reception even on some subway stops. The voicemailbox is active, but the outgoing message clearly states that no message should be left. A later phase may dismantle this. I maintain a GSM unlocked world phone, so that I can throw in a GSM chip while I am in Turkey, Italy, Holland, or any other number of countries that utilize the flexibility of GSM... the phone is a NOkia, still the most widely used brand in the world, and comes with an A/C port that is universal to all their phones and chargers... which means that when abroad, if I run out of juice, 4 out of 10 people will be able to help me.
Verizon has stupid ads, but they have great reception
Nokia could do a few things better, but they do a lot really well

phase three of communication plan has been implemented succesfully:
my SMS works, the Treo 650 archives all the messages so I don't have space issues and don't need to organize or delete any of them. I've been succesfuly sms'ing friends and colleagues, we have had fruitful conversations. I can also SMS to email addresses, which is good.
Palm; 650 good, no thoughts on the 700 yet

phase four of communication plan has been implemented succesfully:
Gmail was installed on the Treo 650... it can pull emails from the gmail server, and doesn't store them locally so there's no storage issues, and because its actual software created by google, it's not trying to rig a regular web page to fit onto a mini screen; it's all formatted perfectly and with great user functionality.
download gmail to your phone

phase five of communication plan has been implemented succesfully:
My Treo syncs with my macintosh via bluetooth, it stores my phone numbers and calender date in the iCal and Addressbook software, where I can edit the data quickly. A backup copy is also stored in the Palm desktop software, if I ever want to access it. The apple side makes it possible for me to easily port numbers over to a non-palm based software if needed. THe bluetooth means I don't ever have to look for a cable.
<a href="http"//www.apple.com">apple computer
If you haven't used this tech yet, you should

New steps.

I have just begun a process of changing e-mail content... It's a two-part phase which involves (1) altering my vocabulary to more succinctly get across my point and my tone... Which sounds obvious, but it is more a matter of ridding my e-mails of unneccesary punctuation, words, repetition, adjectives, slang, etc. The next part (2) involves ridding my e-mails of signatures. I will no longer append an e-mail with my name, affiliation, or any other data. THe name is already obvious as it is in the header of the e-mail, affiliation can usually be understood from the host of the e-mail address, while other data such as address, phone number etc. should be readily accesible on the internet... To better facilitate this, I will create a web page on one of the sites I use that will contain contact information and other important data, when one googles to find my phone number, they should be directed to that site; if it does not, that just means I'm not important enough to wind up being picked up by the google-bots, and therefore, you should have no reason to call or write me.

Dear World,

first off, Hello*. We haven't talked in a while. I know, it's been rough for the past 6 years. We've tried counseling, looking inwards for strength, buying strength at the expense of future generations from China, different jobs, hiring consultants and new management, restructuring and consolidating divisions, I even tried roughing you up extensively (hey- it worked in the past) but it's all been so tough. I'm sorry I didn't think things through - but come on baby, that's never been my style. I think I can change, I think I can grow.
See, today I woke up uncannily at 5:30, ( I might be a bit intolerant to something I consumed) and went for a quick jaunt at the gym before the sun even rose. When I returned I was in good spirits, and thought, "hey that's weird- I'm in good spirits, what GIVES". As the sun started rising, my ipod, which has a mech-sadistic spirit of its own, decided to show me the light of the eye inside my mind. So, John Lennon told me that it's (just like) starting over. (amazon windows media player link) Can you believe I tried to kick this guy out of the country? (link) I think I'll go over to strawberry fields today and leave him a nice flower.

while you're at it, listen to the Rolling stones landmark interview with John Lennon conducted in 1970 (it's free) click here - itunes store

with love and affection,

Everyone knows how much I hate telephones, and how hard it is to get in touch with me... I've decided to explain my side of the story; regardless of whether you believe it or not, there is logic to the scenario outlined below, and it can apply to everyone.

When you place a call to me, lets assume I am in a place that cannot get reception (studio, lecture halls, dungeon), or that I am unwilling to answer the call (in a state of mental disarray)... here's what happens:

1) the call goes to voicemail, at which point you leave a voicemail and think to yourself "mvb will call me back"
1b) my phone does not register your call, because it did not have reception.
2) when I get reception, a little thing pops up that says "you have voicemail
3) I say, maybe I should check that... in the off chance that I do:
3b) I dial 123
3c) I dial my 4 digit password
3d) A woman says "you have X messages, to play your messages press 1"
3e) I dial 1
3h) A woman says "new voicemail, tuesday 5:01pm"
3d) voicemail one is a friend of mine who likes to leave 2 minute long voicemails that go nowhere.
3f) A woman says "to delete press 7, to save press 9, to ...."
3g) I dial 7
3h) A woman says "new voicemail, tuesday 5:10pm"
3i) voicemail two is a friend who says "Call me back"
3g) I dial 7
3h) A woman says "new voicemail, tuesday 5:20pm"
3i) voicemail three is a friend yelling over traffic to call him as his voice is garbled up by bad reception and I have no idea who it is.
3j) I dial 7 (or 5-6 if I feel it's important enough to go through a menu to discover the caller's number)
3k) I dial the hang up button.
4) I dial the down button to get into my contacts
4b) I dial a number of keys to enter the first two letters of friend 2's name (this could be anywhere from 2 to 10 keypad clicks)
4c) the name is shown on a list of names.
4d) I dial the call button
4e) a list of numbers for that individual shows up
4f) I dial the call button (unless I need to call work number, in which case I dial the down button to get to the number, then dial call)
5) I call my friend, frazzled, angered, and aghast.

at this point I have dialed between 17 and 28 digits and listened to countless sentences of nonsense.

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY!!!
I will share it with you.

1) you send me a text message (some of you will say, well then I have to dial all those digits... TOUGH... you could also use a template that says "call me back")
1b) my phone does not register your text, because it did not have reception.
1c) the text message is stored in the ether (yes, the ether)
2) when I get reception, a little thing pops up that says "new text message"
3) I say, maybe I should check that... in the off chance that I do:
3b) I dial "view"
3c) I see a text message from my friend that says "call me"
3d) I dial the call button
3e) the number that the message came from (!) shows up.
3f) I dial the call button.
4) I call my friend, happy that they have discovered sms texting.

at this point I have dialed 3 digits, and listened to nothing.

Needless to say. By the end of this month I will no longer have voicemail service on my phone.

Having faith that the future will forget, and therefore make our judgements ethical is an interesting concept when we are indeed IN the future and we look upon the past, but using a potential future scenario/mindset to justify our present is.... wrong?

Or maybe... some crazy ass cab driver crashed into the Gallery last night.
